What's the Significance of Good Friday?

Monday, 18 April 2011 02:28 PM EDT

Good Friday is a Christian observance that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday always falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday.

According to the Gospels, Judas, a disciple of Jesus, led the arrest of Jesus that took place in the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas’ betrayal earned him a monetary payoff.

Throughout grueling testimony by the Sanhedrin, Jesus continued to affirm that he was the Son of God. The high priest accused Jesus of blasphemy and sentenced him to death.

The next morning, Jesus was brought before Pontius Pilate, Roman governor, to be tried. Pilate eventually declared Jesus innocent, but still allowed him to be crucified.

Jesus then carried his cross to the site of his execution; in Latin, “Calvary,” and was crucified with two common criminals. He was tortured on the cross for six hours.

Good Friday is commemorated differently by different sects of Christianity, but all consider it a Holy Day commemorating the ultimate sacrifice.
