Most people are familiar with Good Friday, but not as many recognize the name “Maundy Thursday,” the Thursday preceding Good Friday before Easter, also known as “Holy Thursday.”
The Holy day denotes the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his apostles before his betrayal by Judas and subsequent crucifixion.
During Maundy Thursday, two traditions are observed. The first is the act of feet-washing in honor of Jesus washing the feet of his apostles before their Passover meal. Clergy members often perform this act in their church services.
The second observance is that of the Eucharist or taking communion. Most churches have a special communion service on Maundy Thursday.
