7 Qualities That Make a Good Golf Caddie

By    |   Tuesday, 10 July 2018 12:08 PM EDT

The best golf caddies not only know how to help golfers play a good game, but they also help players enjoy a day on the course. Caddies are actually partners for the pros and amateurs alike.

Caddies can be responsible for much of a player’s success. People might think of them as guys who just carry around bags. However, they're there for all aspects of a good game of golf.

These seven qualities make a good golf caddie:

1. Know the course — A golf caddie is important to every golfer for confidence, GolfLink points out. This is especially valuable for golfers playing a course for the first time. A good caddie knows the greens, slopes, and ways for the best drives.

2. Understanding the game — The ability to give advice on shots and selecting the right clubs makes a caddie a great partner. A caddie who has been with a golfer for awhile can profoundly help in management of play.

3. Emotional boosting — Caddies aren’t just sidekicks on the course but also supporters. They help golfers stay positive and compliment as much as possible when things go right, thereby keeping optimism alive to improve the game.

4. Watch the ball — Good caddies should know where a ball lands to keep golfers on track, notes Larry Anderson in Golfweek. Keeping an eye on the ball at all times helps even if a caddie isn’t sure exactly where it ended up. Knowing the general area allows quicker location.

5. Organization — This includes knowing how golfers keep their particular bags in order. Clubs should be put back in the right place after each shot. Cleaning golf balls and clubs for each hole also helps a player.

6. The right position — Don’t stand in a player’s line of putt, and make sure to always keep quiet, advises the Western Golf Association. Never stay behind a player. Keep even with the golfer or stay slightly ahead.

7. Stay on the ball — This involves hustling to keep up with the golfer and knowing where the ball is to mark its position. Know what the player wants and ask questions when necessary.
