“Science is an answer to our prayers”: This is one of many statements White House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), has made throughout her political career amid the global warming vs. climate change debate.

Following many of her Democratic counterparts, Pelosi has been a firm advocate of climate change, a scientific theory that applies to major changes in temperature, precipitation, and wind effects for several decades or more. She also has put her muscle behind global warming, the more narrow theory that attempts to link rising temperatures to such scenarios as greenhouse gas emissions.

In May, Pelosi took aim at her opponents at a rally known as Time to Wake Up Congress to Climate Change. “What we’re talking about here is evidence-based,” Pelosi said as she claimed her opponents prioritized faith over science.

At the rally, Pelosi sounded a sense of urgency toward her fellow lawmakers on both sides of the party aisle. “Time — it’s about time,” she said at the event. “It’s about time for us to wake up, Congress. It’s about the time that we have lost because of the opportunities that have been missed the past several years.”

But Pelosi’s advocacy toward making sound decisions amid the global warming vs. climate change debate is not a recent phenomenon. On multiple occasions, she has asserted it was one of the reasons she sought elected office.

In 2008, Pelosi appeared in a PSA ad alongside Newt Gingrich, former Republican speaker of the House. While the two political figures have staunchly different ideals, they gave a united message about the importance of addressing climate change through a campaign known as We Can Solve It.

“We need cleaner forms of energy, and we need them fast,” Pelosi said in the PSA. “Together we can do this.”

Pelosi also has gone on record and supported President Barack Obama’s global efforts toward addressing climate change.

“There is no excuse left for inaction,” Pelosi said in a statement on a proposed agreement between the U.S. and China to reduce carbon pollution. “No nation can escape the impact of climate change, nor can any nation shirk its responsibility to confront this shared challenge.”

Pelosi also has given her support of the third National Climate Assessment, a comprehensive document, composed by scientists, and released in May.

“The verdict of science is clear,” Pelosi said of the assessment. “Climate change is real, and communities across America are already feeling the effects. Rising temperatures, longer droughts, more frequent floods, surging seas and shifting seasons are taking a growing toll on our world.”

While many of Pelosi’s recent comments have been directed more so at the overarching issue of climate change, she also has spoken more pointedly about global warming.

In November 2007, Pelosi gave a ringing endorsement toward the statements made within the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel’s report on global warming.

“This report renews our charge to enact strong policies to address our energy security and stem the tide of global warming,” Pelosi said in a news release, immediately after the UN panel’s report was issued.

In the same news release, Pelosi stated laws aimed at stemming the perceived global warming threat equated to a moral decision. “Those most at risk are the world’s poor, young children, the elderly and ill,” she said.
