Girls With Guns: How to Overcome the Fear of Guns for Beginners

By    |   Wednesday, 01 April 2015 03:41 PM EDT

Girls with guns who weren't exposed to firearms while growing up may find the idea of going to the gun range or taking a firearms safety course quite intimidating. It certainly doesn't help that the media mostly only reports about gun atrocities when used by criminals, but rarely on the successful defensive gun use by a legally armed, law-abiding citizen.

One of the best ways to overcome a fear of guns is to start with a basic handgun or firearm safety class. Most gun ranges offer these on an ongoing basis, or you can contact the National Rifle Association, which has a listing of classes and instructors all over the country.

Firearms safety classes typically last about eight hours and include a lot of safety and explanations behind what you will be doing on the range, followed by closely monitored, structured range time. Since shooting is a perishable skill, it is important that you make target practice a regular part of your routine after your first class.

Another great way to overcome a fear of guns is to find other like minded women to shoot with. This ensures accountability for practice sessions and also eases some of the anxiety that new shooters sometimes have.

A great place to start is with a reputable women's gun club, such as A Girl and a Gun or The Well Armed Woman. You will likely make some great friendships in the process.

Finally, just breathe. A gun is just a tool. It's an inanimate object that is neither good nor bad. If you become proficient using it and practice regularly, it could very well save your life or the life of someone you love one day.
