By    |   Wednesday, 06 May 2015 11:03 AM EDT

Domestic gender roles have expanded vastly in the past 40 years and it should be no different for girls with guns when it comes to cleaning their own firearms.

One of the biggest reasons women tend to shy away from gun cleaning is fear. Many just got past the fear they initially felt when learning to shoot and now they are being told to tackle yet another gun related skill.

Doing anything new for the first time is always intimidating, but once you've read your firearm manufacturer's manual and actually field stripped your gun for the first time, each time after that is a lot less threatening. Firearm maintenance, cleaning and inspecting is just a natural extension of the journey you've already begun.

Field stripping your own firearm and cleaning it also helps you become more familiar with some of the internal workings of your gun. Once you become familiar with this process, you will be more keenly aware of something that doesn't look right, may be broken or why you may be having problems with more frequent malfunctions. If you are the one carrying and shooting it, who better to be the one most familiar with it?

As women taking charge of our own safety, it's only logical that we also be in charge of making sure the tool we may need to defend ourselves and our loved ones is in perfect working order.

Not being dependent on someone else for our security is an empowering feeling. Not having to rely on another to clean and maintain our guns is just another liberating skill. If girls with guns are responsible enough to own and carry a firearm, they need to also be responsible enough to clean and maintain it.
