Georgia Abortion Laws and How They Compare Nationally

Abortion is legal in Georgia through the first two trimesters of pregnancy. But since July 2015, state law requires a 24-hour waiting period with counseling before a woman can undergo an abortion, according to FindLaw.

Under coverage rules in the Affordable Care Act, abortion procedures in Georgia are only covered by insurance if a woman's life or health are endangered. That same rule is in effect for state employees under their insurance plans. In the case of incest, rape, or when a woman's life is endangered, public funds are available, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Georgia, like 37 other states, requires an abortion to be performed by a licensed physician. Like 19 other states, it requires a 24-hour waiting period. It is among 19 states to institute a ban on partial-birth abortions as of April 2015, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Georgia a grade of F for choice-related laws. That organization labeled Republican Gov. Nathan Deal and the state Senate as “anti-choice” and the state House as “mixed-choice.” It noted that 96 percent of counties in the state are without an abortion clinic.

Americans United for Life ranked Georgia at No. 15 on its “Life List,” saying the state “provides significant legal protections for women and unborn children."
