Francis Chan Controversial Quotes: 7 Hot-button Statements From the Christian Evangelist

By    |   Thursday, 14 May 2015 04:40 PM EDT

Reverend Francis Chan has served people from all walks of life. Through his ministry at Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California, to his online sermons and his work with the poor, Chan strives to be an example of how to follow God's plan. In 2010, Chan and his family worked among the neediest people of San Francisco, serving hot food and providing care to the homeless, drastically poor and addicted.

While Chan is known to give of himself, he is a very popular preacher and quite prolific in stating his opinions loud and clear. He does not shy away from controversy, either, as some of his statements indicate.

1. Prayer is conditional, according to Reverend Chan. "We see in scripture God often hates our prayers. He says I'm not listening to that; it's a bunch of noise to me. You know, if there's doubting or selfishness or unrepentance, insincerity, it's a lack of reverence," Chan explained in an interview with The Christian Post.

In his many books, Francis Chan has established his position on a number of topics:

2. In "Forgotten God," he established, "I am tired of living in a way that looks exactly like people who do not have the Holy Spirit of God living in them."

3. In the same book, he wrote, "On a scale of one to ten, how much do you love the church? As you look around at your brothers and sisters in Christ, do you think to yourself, "I love these people so much. I pray God empowers me in some way to encourage these people toward a deeper walk with Him?"

4. In "Crazy Love" Chan expressed several thoughts about relationships, "Lukewarm people rarely share their faith with their neighbors, coworkers, or friends. They do not want to be rejected, nor do they want to make people uncomfortable by talking about private issues like religion."

5. "People who are obsessed with God have an intimate relationship with Him. They are nourished by God's Word throughout the day because they know that forty minutes on Sunday is not enough to sustain them for a whole week, especially when they will encounter so many distractions and alternative messages."

6. "Lukewarm people love others but do not seek to love others as much as they love themselves. Their love is highly conditional and very selective, and generally comes with strings attached."

7. In "Multiply" he discounted formal education in contrast to simple Christian calling, "Though you may not have a degree in psychology, you are still called to stand with the Christians in your life as they pursue the healing and transformation that only come through the power of the Holy Spirit."
