Foxconn will add 1 million robots to its workforce in the coming years in an attempt to cut labor expenses and improve efficiency,
CNN reports.
The company, which manufactures products for tech giants such as Apple and Microsoft, employs more than 1 million workers in China and an additional 200,000 around the world.
The company currently employs 10,000 robots but plans to increase that number to 300,000 by 2012 and 1 million by 2014.
"This year's wage increase has been quite significant and I do not expect the pace to slow down next year," said CK Lu, a Taipei-based senior analyst at research firm Gartner, in reference to why the company has moved away from human labor.
Foxconn has also been the focus of many debates over inhumane working conditions. Thirteen employees died last year and a recent explosion at the Chengdu plant in China killed two and left 16 injured.
