Fishing in Michigan: Top Spots for Angling in the Great Lakes State

By    |   Wednesday, 16 December 2015 05:21 PM EST

One of the best things about fishing in Michigan is the numerous bodies of water available to fish in and the abundant species of fish that anglers are able to catch. People who are familiar with fishing in Michigan probably already have a favorite spot or two, but for those who are unfamiliar with Michigan territory the choices may be overwhelming.

Here are some places the Game & Fish magazine and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) suggest that anglers and their families can go to catch fish in the Great Lakes State.

1. Skeels Lake
According to the Michigan DNR, Skeels Lake in Delta County offers great fishing opportunities for the whole family. Floating piers make it easy and convenient to access the water. This body of water is ideal for boaters as it also has numerous boat launches available. Although great for fishing, this lake is not used for swimming as the marl lake bottom proves to be treacherous terrain. Common fish species available include bluegill, black crappie, rock bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, brown bullhead, walleye, yellow perch, and largemouth bass.

2. Silver Lake
Silver Lake is located in Oceana County and managed by DNR Parks and Recreation Division. People who are new to fishing in Michigan find that this 690-acre lake is ideal for those who like shore fishing with worms and minnow. Fish species commonly found here are pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, walleye, black crappie, and rock bass. Amenities include camping, rustic restrooms, and picnic area.

3. Muskegon Lake
Game & Fish magazine named Muskegon Lake as one of the hot spots for fishing in January. Those who plan on going ice fishing in Michigan may consider this destination for bluegills, perch, walleye, and northern pike. It is advisable to use extreme caution on the ice as the lake is very deep and is known for having fast currents.
