Fishing in Iowa: Online Resources and Mobile Apps to Enhance the Experience

By    |   Saturday, 28 November 2015 10:16 PM EST

There are apps for everything these days, and fishing in no exception. If you're planning to head out Iowa's lakes, rivers and streams to cast for trout or bass, catfish or perch, there are a number of online resources to help enhance your fishing experience in the Hawkeye State.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources website
is a good place to begin plotting your next fishing trip. It offers lots of useful information about species of fish found in Iowa, tips and fishing how-to's, and specifics on where to purchase a fishing license in the state.

The website also has Fishing Atlas feature. After clicking on the link, users are taken to an interactive map showing the contours for 150 lakes across the state. Use the search function to zoom in on the one you want to fish. You'll also be able to see nearby roads, amenities and the topography.

The angling experience can also be enhanced by a good fishing application, which can be downloaded to an iPhone or Android device, and used in the field. Here are three to look up.

1. IGFA Mobile
Sport anglers will be especially keen on downloading this app, which tells you the current world record for the fish you are trying to catch. "You can search IGFA angling World Records, plan your trips, identify and track your catches, find the nearest IGFA Weigh Station and more," according to World Fishing Network, which ranked the best fishing apps in the industry.

2. Fishing Calendar
Iowa anglers will dig this app as it lets you know where to fish during what times of year and also the best time to fish at your location. "This app lives up to its name - this advanced prediction calendar shows you the best fishing times for any location to help you increase your chance of a catch," according to World Fishing Network.

3. Fishidy
It is free to download, and once you have, Fishidy lets you track and view the fish you've hooked. "For fetching detailed information on species data, tips and more on waterways across the country and using interactive fishing maps that include contour lines, fishery facts and boat ramps, Fishidy is your best free option," reported World Fishing Network.
