Fish Tales: Record-Size Catches in Colorado

By    |   Friday, 13 November 2015 04:46 PM EST

With more than 35 species of fish to catch in Colorado, there are plenty of bragging rights to be had for anglers whose catch is the biggest.

Most fishermen count the biggest fish based on its weight. Colorado Parks & Wildlife keeps records for both the biggest by weight and also by length. In many cases, those fish might be one in the same, but that's not always the case.

Here are some of the record-size trout catches in Colorado:

1. Rainbow Trout
Lee Cox holds Colorado's record for heaviest rainbow trout. His catch weighed in at 19 pounds, 10 ounces in 2003. This large fish, however, was not long enough to qualify for the biggest by length. The longest rainbow fish caught was more than 40 inches long and caught by Tony Felicilda.

2. Brook Trout
The record for the heaviest brook trout goes back to 1947. Caught by George Knorr in Upper Cataract Lake, it weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces. State Record Fish reports that at 68 years, it is the longest-standing record for the state for any species. On the other hand, Mark Armstrong caught the longest brook trout in the Colorado River, measuring 26 inches in length.

3. Brown Trout
Bragging rights for the heaviest brown trout belong Alan Schneider, who in 1988 caught a 30-pound, 8-ounce fish in Roaring Judy Ponds. The Colorado River produced the longest brown trout, a 38-inch fish caught by Darrel Armstrong

4. Cutthroat Native Trout
Colorado Parks & Wildlife acknowledges 14 subspecies of cutthroat native trout, due to the Colorado topography that has isolated the fish from each other. While not as longstanding as the record for brook trout, a 16-pound cutthroat was caught in 1964 by George Hranchak. Jack Duerson holds the record for the longest cutthroat trout at 30 inches.
