How to Treat Fibromyalgia

Friday, 10 June 2011 03:59 PM EDT

Fibromyalgia treatment includes certain fibromyalgia medications as well as lifestyle changes. Basically, fibromyalgia treatments focus on minimizing the symptoms and improving a person's general well-being. Fibromyalgia medications help to relieve pain and induce sound sleep.

Some of the common drugs used for fibromyalgia treatments are as follows:

1. Analgesics or pain killers such as acetaminophen (tylenol) and tramadol (ultram), when used for fibromyalgia, relieve pain and stiffness of muscles.
2. Antidepressants such as Duloxetine (Cymbalta) and Fluoxetine (Prozac) also help in fibromyalgia by relieving fatigue and sleeplessness.
3. Antiseizure drugs such as Gabapentene (neurontin) are prescribed for certain types of fibromyalgia. Pregabalin (Lyrica) is the first drug approved by Food and Drug Administration for fibromyalgia treatment, which works by blocking nerve pain.
4. Many natural treatments for fibromyalgia like biofeedback, acupuncture, and massage therapy also help in fibromyalgia management.

Apart from these medications, counseling, patient education, and exercise are also helpful. Low impact aerobic exercises like swimming, cycling, and walking are generally recommended.
