New Jersey's capital city that borders the Delaware River, Trenton is a city where many important historical events have taken place. Let's take a look at some of the facts about Trenton that have made it such an important location.

1. The Battle of Trenton

This military conflict between Great Britain and the colonies of North America happened during the Revolutionary War. It took place on December 26, 1776, in Trenton. The significance of this event was that the American troops victoriously fought against the British Hessian forces as part of a raid led by General George Washington at the Delaware River. According to Land of the Brave, the American troops became enlivened when they defeated the British troops with relatively little effort.

2. Manufacturing History

According to Mercer County, Trenton was given the slogan "Trenton Makes, The World Takes" during the 1920s. This happened due to the fact that Trenton became a manufacturing leader in the industries of steel and rubber making, wire rope, linoleum and ceramics.

3. Trenton Inventions

Destination Trenton reports that Trenton is the site of several different inventions. The I-beam was invented there, as was Roebling wire rope. More mentionable inventions that happened in Trenton include Bayer Aspirin, Magic Markers, oyster crackers and the pork roll. 

4. Mentionable Firsts

According to Destination Trenton, Trenton was the location of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, even before Philadelphia. Mercer County also reports that Trenton was the location where the very first professional basketball was ever played in 1896. 

5. Famous Citizens

Mercer County provides a list of famous people who were born in Trenton. Sports figures include Dennis Rodman and Troy Vincent. Trenton's famous authors include Paul Robeson, Janet Evanovich, and Ann Martin. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Samuel A. Alito, Jr. were both born in Trenton. Comedian Ernie Kovacs and General Norman Schwarzkopf share Trenton as their hometown.
