Erectile Dysfunction: Top 5 Drugs That Work

Wednesday, 16 March 2011 04:15 PM EDT

Erectile dysfunction, commonly called impotence, causes some men to lose the ability to achieve or maintain an erection. Although erectile dysfunction treatment through drugs has been found effective, it has its side effects as well. Here’s a look at the top five choices of medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction:

1. Viagra (Sildenafil)
This drug helps increase engorgement of the penis. Viagra has been found to be effective in men with other accompanying medical conditions like hypertension, depression, heart disease, and even in men who have undergone bypass surgery. Sildenafil comes in oral tablets in different dosages, and should be taken on an empty stomach an hour before sexual activity. Some of the side effects include nausea, vomiting, hypotension, shock, chest pain, and fainting.

2. Levitra (Vardenafil)
Levitra works much like Viagra. In lab studies and trials, Levitra has been found effective at improving erectile dysfunction compared to a placebo. The starting dose should be 10mg., taken an hour before meals to prevent food from absorbing the drug, which makes it less effective. Vardenafil causes milder side effects, such as congestion, body aches, nausea, dizziness, and headache. Prolonged and painful erections have been reported in some cases.

3. Cialis (Tadalafil)
Cialis works much like the other two drugs; the initial recommended dosage is 5 mg. Cialis has been found to cause side effects such as indigestion, back ache, nasal congestion, blurred vision, and pain in thighs and buttocks. People with a weak heart, or a blood disorder are advised not to use Cialis. Men taking medication for other medical conditions should avoid Cialis; this drug may worsen the condition.

4. Priligy (Duloxetine)
Priligy was earlier rejected by the Food and Drug Administration; the company Johnson & Johnson still has the option to file another submission for approval. This drug is reported to delay ejaculation effectively.

5. Intracavernosal injections
Intracavernosal injections are drugs that are directly injected into the penis to get an erection. These types of drugs have several complications. Therefore, they are not very popular, even if they are effective.
