How to Treat Endometriosis

Thursday, 26 May 2011 03:55 PM EDT

There are several therapeutic, surgical, and drug treatments for endometriosis. Depending on the severity of the condition, endometriosis symptoms, and the endometriosis stage, one or a combination of these treatments is recommended.

The appropriate method for treating endometriosis is identified based on whether the person is of reproductive age or not. For women of reproductive age who are infertile, treating endometriosis involves surgery and medication. Surgery is performed to remove endometrial cysts outside the uterus, and hormonal treatment and fertility medications are administered to treat infertility.

For women who are fertile and are of reproductive age, the treatment includes medication to relieve endometriosis symptoms and to preserve fertility. This is a conservative treatment that aims at excision of the cysts and restoration of normal pelvic activity.

Treating endometriosis in women who are not of reproductive age or who do not wish to become pregnant includes hormonal medication such as progesterone, steroids such as Danazol, Lupron Depot® shots, and aromatase inhibitors. The choice of medication depends on the endometriosis stage.

To some extent, lifestyle and dietary changes can also improve endometriosis symptoms.
