Top 5 Employers in Kentucky: Which Companies Have the Most Jobs?

Four of the top five employers in Kentucky are in the health sector, including three medical systems and a Fortune 500 company, Humana Inc. According to the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, in 2014, Kentucky’s Business Climate ranked in the top 10 in the United States based on several factors such as total new facilities and projects, and continued growth is expected in 2015. Here are five top employers in Kentucky:

1. Our Lady Bellefonte Hospital


Located in Ashland, Our Lady Bellefonte Hospital is part of the Bon Secours Health System, which has facilities in Maryland, New York, South Carolina and Virginia in addition to this Kentucky hospital that employs 12,000 people. Their mission is to “bring compassion to health care and to be good to hose in need, especially those who are poor or dying.”

2. Cincinnati International Airport (CVG)

Although the name ties this airport to Ohio, its address is located in Hebron, Kentucky. In 2014, CVG introduced three new airline partners—Ultimate Air Shuttle, Frontier, and Allegiant—leading to an increase in both passenger and cargo traffic. Employing over 11,000 people, CVG had an economic impact of 3.6 billion in 2014 with plans for continued growth as one of the top five employers in Kentucky.

3. Humana Inc.

Coming in again at number 73 on Fortune 500’s list in 2014, Humana increased their revenues nearly 6 percent to over $41 billion and ranks as the third-largest employer in Kentucky. Their impact extends beyond Kentucky’s borders as they serve more than 13 million customers and more than 50,000 total employees throughout the United States, with over 10,000 of those in Kentucky.

4. Norton Healthcare

With five hospitals in Louisville, Norton Healthcare is the largest health care system in the region and ranks fourth largest among employers in Kentucky with over 10,000 employees. Services include immediate care, emergency rooms, doctors’ offices, and specialists and affiliate hospitals covering cancer, weight loss, mental health, orthopedics, heart disease, neurology, women’s health, healthcare for children and more.

5. University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital

Down Interstate 64 and located about an hour away from the Norton hospitals is University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital. As part of Lexington’s largest employer, Chandler also provides education and research related to the university’s six medical-oriented degrees in dentistry, health sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health. This system also employs over 10,000 workers.
