Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the country, but it serves as the headquarter for many successful employers including Citizens Bank and Alex and Ani. The economy revolves heavily around industries like manufacturing, tourism, financial services, and education.

Hospitals and universities employ the most individuals throughout the state. Communications companies like Verizon and retail stores provide a significant number of jobs, too.

Here are the top five employers in Rhode Island:

1. Roger Williams Medical Center

Located in Providence, Roger Williams employs 14,000 people and offers advanced specialty care and medical services. It's also a teaching hospital affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine, and gives students a chance to learn and work alongside skilled and experienced physicians.

2. Hasbro Children's Hospital

The second largest medical employer in Rhode Island is also in Providence. The pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital employs 6,000 individuals ranging from nurses and clinicians to technicians and research assistants. It's also the principal teaching hospital of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

3. Brown University

One of the most prestigious universities in the country, Brown has over 4,400 employees. In addition to jobs, it also stimulates economic growth through research funding. There will be more construction jobs available, as well as locally purchased goods and services as the campus and student body grows. The school employs individuals with a range of education and experience, from professors and administrative staff to security guards and food service workers.

4. CVS

Between the CVS Caremark store support center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island and many retail locations, CVS employs approximately 6,000 Rhode Islanders. There are 63 stores that provide jobs for pharmacists, sales associates, warehouse workers, distributors, data analysts and legal council for the corporation as a whole.

5. Citizens Financial Group, Inc.

Hiring over 5,300 Rhode Islanders in 25 locations in Providence alone, including company headquarters, Citizens Financial is a leading employer in the state. The company offers banking and investments for individuals and businesses and offers positions for analysts, financial consultants, and many other banking professionals.
