The holiday was started during World War I by the Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers.

In honor of the holiday, the nation’s two biggest doughnut chains are offering up some great donut deals.

Dunkin Donuts is offering customers a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage.

Competitor Krispy Kreme is upping the ante by giving customers a free doughnut just for visiting the store.
