Donald Miller Quotes on Life: 7 Memorable Statements From Christian Writer

By    |   Friday, 15 May 2015 02:26 PM EDT

In 2003, Donald Miller published "Blue Like Jazz" a New York Times bestseller in which he wrote about his relationship with God. Having grown up in a fatherless home, Miller felt the absence of a male guide in his life, something he has written and spoken in public about many times.

A popular writer, speaker and broadcaster, Miller lives in Nashville with his wife Elizabeth. Throughout his writing career, Miller has formed a number of interesting opinions about life. Below are a few:

SPECIAL: Prayer Changes Your Brain in 4 Amazing Ways

1. In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Miller spoke of how to know your place in life. "So I think understanding your life as a story is a really terrific way of kind of knowing where you are and knowing who you are."

2. "I think it's hard for a lot of people to be honest about their lives."

3. In an interview for FaithStreet, Miller talks about what he learned when writing. "What I was thinking was how to write a story based on my life. Which showed me what needs to be in life and what doesn't, how to live a more meaningful story."

4. In his book, "To Own a Dragon," Miller writes on the danger in his life of not having a father figure. "I thought the confusion I felt growing up without a father was just part of life, and there seemed to be benefits. Life was an open range."

5. "Life will reveal answers at the pace life wishes to do so. You feel like running, but life is on a stroll. This is how God does things."

6. "No, life cannot be understood flat on a page. It has to be lived; a person has to get out of his head, has to fall in love, has to memorize poems, has to jump off bridges into rivers, has to stand in an empty desert and whisper sonnets under his breath."

7. Miller touches on the meaning of life writing in his book, "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I learned While Editing My Life." "And once you live a good story, you get a taste for a kind of meaning in life, and you can't go back to being normal; you can't go back to meaningless scenes stitched together by the forgettable thread of wasted time."
