By    |   Friday, 15 May 2015 04:41 PM EDT

Donald Miller published the 2003 book, "Blue Like Jazz," to much acclaim, and it went on to be a New York Times bestseller. In 2012, the book was made into a movie, but didn't succeed at the box office.

Learning from the mistakes and losses of the movie, Miller founded two companies, StoryBrand, a marketing agency and Storyline, which is a life-coaching organization. The two companies grew into very successful businesses, which he runs from Nashville where he lives with his wife Elizabeth.

Donald Miller also founded the "Mentoring Project," which partners with Christian churches to help kids from fatherless homes. The project has proven to be a successful one, mentoring many children across the United States.

Along the way, Miller has not shied away from controversy. Here is a look at some of the controversial statements Miller has made through the years:

1. In his Storyline blog, Miller encourages Christians to start their own churches. "Many of our readers are Christians but do not attend church. I encourage you to start communities of your own and simply 'be' the church."

2. In a PBS interview, Miller said there is a problem among the male population. "We don't have a femininity crisis in this country; we have a masculinity crisis."

3. On his Storyline blog, Miller comments on the behavior of some religious leaders. "In my day, I've met more than a few religious leaders who get away with near criminal activity because the masses are convinced they are saints."

4. In the past, Miller has spoken about police handling of incidents. "When heads of police departments pronounce accused officers innocent within hours of a shooting, America loses trust. And those pronouncements keep happening."

5. In talking more about the police, Miller has gone on record as saying, "The point is the knee-jerk reaction of police officers to defend each other no matter what really happened will continue to erode trust in the public. It's just a bad story. From an outside perspective, they're playing the role of mob characters, not heroic cops."

6. On his blog, Miller wrote on traditional church sermons. "To be brutally honest, I don't learn much about God hearing a sermon and I don't connect with him by singing songs to him."

7. In a Christianity Today interview, Miller discussed the state of the nation. "America is not God's country. It's not considered a Christian nation anymore. You have to look at everybody, not just Christians and say, what are the rights of these people based on this constitution."
