By    |   Sunday, 11 January 2015 09:34 PM EST

Dog rescues work both ways when man’s best friend comes to an owner’s aid. Here are seven amazing examples:

1. A dog rescued from an abandoned home by his new owner returned the favor a month later in 2014 by saving him from a fire Mansfield, Ohio, according to Fox. The blaze had started in a nearby home and spread to Jacob Martin’s house. His dog Buddy started barking and woke him up just in time.

2. Angel, a golden retriever, prevented a brutal attack from a cougar on 11-year-old Austin Forman. The boy had been collecting wood in British Columbia, Canada, for the furnace of his family home when he noticed Angel acting strangely. Apparently the dog sensed an attack was near and the hungry cougar suddenly lunged at Austin from about 10 feet away. Angel immediately blocked the attack by jumping into the cat’s path. The dog saved Austin, allowing a police officer managed to shoot the cougar. The dog, only 18 months old, had surgery to repair injuries to its head.

3. A Labrador retriever saved her owner from a diabetic blood-sugar crash in Brookville, Pennsylvania. Roxanne was a guide dog for Joe Mauk, who had become blind because of Type I diabetes, according to Today.com. Mauk took the dog for a walk, but collapsed and was fighting to stay conscious. Roxanne licked his hands when sensing something was wrong and, incredibly, dragged the man back home with her leash. Mauk was able to get through the front door for a syringe of life-saving glucagon to bring his blood levels back to normal.

4. Chi Chi, a tiny Chihuahua, was enjoying a day at the beach in North Carolina in 2008 when his owners, Rick and Mary Lane, noticed him yapping loudly, more than usual, according to Today.com. He even dragged the beach chair he was attached to toward the ocean. That’s when the Lanes saw two elderly women struggling in the water about 100 yards away. A surge had taken the women by surprise and one of them fell headfirst into the current. The other woman was trying to hold her up, and the Lanes came to the rescue to pull the woman out, thanks to Chi Chi’s warning.

5. When Erin Cramer of Shelbyville, Indiana, adopted a loveable pup named Clobberhead, she had no idea the dog would save her life, according to the Huffington Post. The dog had been acting strangely and wouldn’t stay outside, running back into the house. The dog’s behavior made Erin look around the house, and she discovered the laundry room was filling up with gas because of a leak from a hot water heater. It was giving off sparks that could have caused an explosion.

6. Rescue workers were able to find a missing three-year-old girl, thanks to the barking of her friend, a stray black dog. The toddler had wandered into a forest near her home in Pierzwin, Poland, according to Peoplepets.com. While neighbors searched for the girl through the cold night, the dog kept the girl warm to help her survive the ordeal before she was found in the morning.

7. A golden retriever named Brutis caught a deadly coral snake just as it was slithering near a young child, according to Dogguide.net. The dog saved the child, but suffered from a nearly fatal bite from the snake. The actions won Brutis a National Hero Dog award in Los Angeles.
