Diverticulitis is marked by sacs or pouches on the lining of the intestine that become inflamed or infected. The condition is often caused by eating a low-fiber diet which results in constipation and hard stools, forcing the individual to strain when passing a bowel movement. This pressure may cause diverticulosis, or pouches, to form.
The formation of diverticulosis occurs in more than half of Americans over 60. Diverticulitis is caused by pieces of feces trapped in the pouches. This entrapment causes infection and inflammation.
Symptoms of diverticulitis include bloating and cramping in the lower abdomen, tenderness, fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Treatment may include bed rest, medication, and a liquid diet. Diverticulitis is generally a mild condition that can be cured with proper medical treatment.
