Depression: Highly Affective Drugs

Tuesday, 31 May 2011 12:02 PM EDT

Chronic depression is becoming a major health concern these days. It is not unusual to find someone discussing chronic depression and medication.

Chronic depression affects the mood and also affects a person’s sleep, eating habits, and thought process. It is always better to go for depression treatment early, before the depression becomes chronic.

A wide variety of antidepression drugs are prescribed by doctors for chronic depression help. Chronic depression help is possible using antidepressants, which belong to various classes like tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Some of the most commonly prescribed depression drugs include:

Amitriptyline (Elavil®)
Fluoxetine (Prozac®)
Imipramine (Tofranil®)
Duloxetine (Cymbalta®) and
Sertraline (Zoloft®)

One must be aware of the action and side effects of antidepressant drugs. Amitriptyline (Elavil®) has been successfully used for treating patients with chronic depression. Amitriptyline elevates the mood by raising  neurotransmitter levels in the brain and is also sleep inducing, but it is associated with some adverse side effects such as increased suicidal tendencies, a dry mouth, and drowsiness. These antidepressants used for chronic depression help need a prior comprehensive check-up by an expert.
