He is credited with founding The Weather Channel. Despite his close ties with meteorology, however, John Coleman has gone on record in recent years and defined global warming as nothing more than a hoax.

Coleman, who briefly served as the CEO and president of The Weather Channel in its earliest days in the 1980s, has appeared on a number of panels and TV shows in recent years, decrying the assertions made in global warming.

ALERT: Is Global Warming a Hoax? Vote Now

Coleman’s outspoken stance on global warming began in 2008, when he stated on Fox News that he wanted to sue Al Gore, the former U.S. vice president who is oftentimes credited with bringing the topic into mainstream consciousness.

A contingent of scientists and other advocates have argued global warming is taking place, increasing the earth’s temperature over time through the emission of greenhouse gases.

“If you get down to the hard, cold facts, there’s no question about it: Climate change is not happening,” Coleman told Brian Stelter on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” program. “There is no significant man-made global warming now, there hasn’t been any in the past and there’s no reason to expect any in the future.”

In the November 2014 interview, Coleman’s most pointed comment with regard to global warming, perhaps, was saying, “There’s a whole lot of baloney.”

In recent talks, Coleman also has taken aim at figures claiming 97 percent of scientists back global warming, calling the statistic “manipulated.” He also asserts the Democratic Party has turned the issue into a political one, rather than a scientific one.

Coleman, whose career also includes stints as a meteorologist at a number of TV stations, retired from the profession in April 2014. His involvement with The Weather Channel was brief — he left after one year.

Officials at the helm of the operation that Coleman founded have taken a very different stance on global warming, publishing The Weather Channel’s position on its website.

“The climate of the earth is indeed warming, with an increase of approximately 1 to 1-and-a-half degrees Fahrenheit in the past century, more than half of that occurring since the 1970s,” the statement reads, in part.

The release continues, “Impacts can already be seen, especially in the Arctic, where melting glaciers, thawing permafrost, and rapid retreat and thinning of sea ice, all of which are affecting human populations as well as animals and vegetation.”
