7 Popular Features on Dash Cams

By    |   Tuesday, 20 October 2015 07:12 PM EDT

While ordinary dash cams will get the job of recording footage done, some come with unique and popular features buyers might want to consider.

Dashboard cameras typically rest on a vehicle’s rear view mirror. Originally, they started on police cars to record what happens at a scene. Today, however, prices on dash cams have decreased so far that many people can get one of their own.

These are some of the most popular features on dash cams:

1. High definition video
If the footage is blurry and undefined, it won't do much good. High definition dash cams help ensure clear video and readability of signs and license plates.

2. Night vision
Most cameras can capture video well during the day, but a good camera can record well when it is dark outside. This requires an extendable lens and light sensors.

3. Large storage and memory card capabilities
Dash cams have loop recording: Unlike normal cameras that fill up on memory and refuse to record further, dashboards cams continue filming by replacing old footage with new. If the hope is to gather a lot of footage, make sure there is a lot of storage, said Car Cam Central.

4. GPS
Since the camera typically uses the 12-volt power supply found in the front of the car, there may not be room for another separate device if a person needs directions from a GPS device. Fortunately, some dash cams come with GPS capabilities. While they be a little more expensive, it could be cheaper than two contraptions and save you from getting lost.

5. LED display
Drivers interested in viewing the video right from the device may want a dash cam with a built-in display. They tend to be larger in size, however.

6. Wi-Fi
Dash cams with Wi-Fi can transform smartphones into playback devices if there isn’t a display built in. Users can also upload video to Facebook or other networking sites.

7. Driver Assistance Systems
Some devices will notify the driver if the motorist is speeding or drifting between lanes.
