Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested during a sit-in in front of the White House Tuesday morning, reports
PEOPLE.
Hannah was among a crowd of 100 people protesting the expansion of a large oil pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico. The argument is that the pipeline covers the majority of the nation’s freshwater aquifers, and in the event of a leak, may leave 20 million people with contaminated water.
“I do believe we are in a time of crisis for so many things. And in times of crisis, you have to get engaged in the process. You have to walk your talk. Being arrested is something you never hope for. You don’t want to get arrested. But you know it’s a risk you take,” Hannah told PEOPLE after being fined and released.
“Civil disobedience is a long-heralded American tradition,” the ‘Kill Bill’ star added. “The majority of people who got arrested with me were moms, grandmothers, and school teachers. Like me, they are standing up against this big corporation and saying, ‘No.’”
Hannah has been arrested twice previously for protesting environmental issues.
