Crime Statistics Linked to Illegal Aliens

By    |   Saturday, 01 August 2015 11:26 PM EDT

Since Donald Trump announced his bid for the presidency, he has come under fire for accusing illegal aliens at Mexico’s border of high crime statistics.

Now that immigration policy and national security are being discussed and heavily debated, here are a few statistics related to illegal aliens and crime.

1. Rise in Illegal Aliens
Since 1990, the number of unauthorized immigrants has risen more than 60 percent, according to the American Immigration Council. In 1990, about 3.5 million unauthorized immigrants were in the country. In 2010, that number had risen to 11.2 million.

2. Violent and Property Crime Rates
America has seen a decline in overall crime committed. According to the FBI, the U.S. has seen a 45 percent decrease in violent crime since 1990. In addition to violent crime, property crime has also seen a 42 percent decrease since 1990.

3. Cities Close to the Border
Although Violent and Property crimes are low on a national scale, they are particularly low among large cities close to the U.S. Mexico border, which holds a large immigrant population, both legal and illegal. Southern cities such as El Paso, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Diego have seen a drop in crime over the past 20 years, according to the American Immigration Council.

4. Non-U.S. Citizens in Prisons
According to a report by the Center for Immigration Studies, 26.4 percent of convicts in federal jails are labeled non-U.S. citizens.

5. Deported Illegal Aliens
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, six out of 10 unauthorized immigrants removed from the United States in 2013 were convicted of federal or state crimes.
