How to Treat COPD

Tuesday, 21 June 2011 04:49 PM EDT

COPD is an irreversible lung disease. Although many drugs are available that stop the progression of COPD, no drug has been shown to be a complete cure for COPD. Because of its irreversibility, COPD treatment is aimed at slowing down the degeneration of the lungs and progression of the disease. Different stages of COPD require different kinds of treatment.

A COPD prognosis requires various lifestyle changes, like quitting smoking. Alternative therapies such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Antidepressant Therapy are commonly used in COPD treatment.

Clonidine is a COPD medication that is mostly used to treat nicotine withdrawal symptoms patients experience while quitting smoking.

COPD tests can confirm whether the patient has any infections that might have caused COPD. The appropriate treatment for this kind of COPD is antimicrobial drugs.

Bronchodilators, also called Beta2-agonists, are used in COPD treatment to relax the muscles in the airway and aid breathing.

Bronchodilators are available as inhalers, pills, injections, and syrups.
Corticosteroids, Aerosol Therapy, and Pulmonary Rehabilitation can also significantly improve a COPD prognosis.
