How to Diagnose COPD

Tuesday, 21 June 2011 04:39 PM EDT

A medical professional can diagnose COPD on the basis of the patient’s medical history, COPD symptoms, and several tests.

Symptoms like blocked airways and difficulty breathing may indicate a COPD diagnosis. Previous medical history including family history, smoking, and exposure to COPD triggers are reviewed before further examinations are approved.

Generally the first test for COPD is a thorough physical examination. This test measures the patient’s temperature, pulse, and blood pressure. Other tests that may confirm COPD diagnosis are Spirometry, Complete Blood Count (CBC), Arterial Blood Gases, Chest X Ray, Pulse Oximetry, and a CT Scan.

These tests help identify the severity and progression of the COPD diagnosis.

Sputum culture and lung diffusion studies are also commonly carried out in later stages of COPD diagnosis as confirmation.
