Even though Connecticut has one of the strictest gun control laws in the country, travelers to the state can lawfully carry a firearm in the state without a permit under certain circumstances.

According to Connecticut’s Office of Legislative Research, visitors can carry guns legally in the state if they meet the following conditions: The nonresident must be permitted to possess and carry handguns in their home state, the gun needs to be registered in the owner’s home state, and it must be brought into the state for specific purposes, such as a shooting competition, formal weapons training, a gun meeting or exhibition, gun repair, or for practice at an approved firing range.

For travelers passing through Connecticut, the state’s law says as long as nonresidents are transporting guns between states where they can legally possess and carry, they will not be found in violation of Connecticut law.

Connecticut does not recognize pistol permits from any other state, but visitors who hold concealed weapons permits from other states may apply for a $140 non-resident permit through the mail. Applicants must meet the state’s statutory requirement and complete a state approved weapons safety course.
