Where You Can Find Confederate Flag Flying in California

By    |   Wednesday, 19 August 2015 02:37 PM EDT

California stopped the sales of the Confederate flag in government agencies in 2014, well before the current push in 2015 by many states to remove the controversial flag.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill into law on September 26, 2014, and it went into effect in January 2015, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Vote Now: Should the Confederate Flag Be Removed From All Government Buildings?

California tackled the Confederate flag issue after Assemblyman Isadore Hall's mother saw reproduction Confederate cash being sold in a gift store at the capitol, the News said. Hall, who is black, put forth the bill that passed, saying he didn't believe the government should be selling symbols of racism.

The Confederate flag may still be displayed at museums in California as well as on books, the state said, protecting freedom of expression as it applies only to government officials, the News said.

Retail establishments continue to sell the flags in California.

"Today a woman came in and she said she wanted to make sure she got her Confederate flag before they were not able to be sold," a store employee of Big John's Surplus in Riverside told KCAL.

Many California residents have chosen to fly the flag on their private properties, and one case prompted a backlash from neighbors in a condo complex, NBC Los Angeles reported.

The flag continues to be a controversial issue in California. When the state's General Assembly reconvened in August 2015, one of its first orders of business was to call for the federal government to ban the Confederate flag, Breitbart reported.

The resolution called for the government to ban the flag on federal property and also from using Confederate symbolism from being used in state symbols, the website said.
