How to Save Money During the Holidays

Wednesday, 22 December 2010 12:45 PM EST

The holidays can be exciting, fun, and expensive. Between the decorations and purchasing gifts for family and friends you can amass a small fortune in credit card debt. Fortunately, there are ways to save money during the holidays, including:

1. Don't Spend it. The best way to save money this holiday season is to keep it in your pocket. You might be thinking that is impossible. If you have children, this option may be a little more of a challenge. Rather than spending money on gifts, spend quality time with the family and invite everyone to bring a dish.

2. Draw Names: Everyone wants to receive at least one nice gift for the holidays and this tip is a good way to make sure that it happens. Place all the names of friends or family members in a hat or bucket and let each person draw one name. Each person is responsiblChristmas money saving

3. Make Your Gifts: Making your gifts will not only save your money during the holidays, it will show that you care. Receiving a handmade gift is something special and the recipient of your gift will cherish it more because you made it especially for them.

4. Reuse Christmas items. The smell of fresh pine is inviting, but it is an expense that you can avoid each year with an imitation tree. In addition, an imitation tree is less of a mess to take down and clean up once the holiday is over. When you reuse your Christmas ornaments and lighting you will save more money during the holidays.

5. Stay home. Traveling during the holidays can be expensive because fairs go up and roads are busier. Instead, you could invite local family and friends over for a nice home cooked holiday meal. Make the announcement that no gifts need to be exchanged.
