Cosmetic Surgery: 5 Reasons It's OK for Christian Women to Get Breast Implants

By    |   Thursday, 26 March 2015 03:56 PM

Christian women fight through many modern issues, including whether it's appropriate to get cosmetic surgery, and thus alter a body that God created in his own image.

Cosmetic surgery isn't mentioned in the Bible, and the Catholic Church has no official position, which leaves people of faith to search for the answer within their own value system. Without specific instruction, the individual must consider the medical, emotional, social and psychological aspects to come to an informed decision.

Here are five reasons why breast implants appear to be permitted:

1. Health reasons. For example, replacing a breast that was removed due to a mastectomy or if a woman suffered significant breast damage in an accident. In such cases, implants can be viewed not as enhancements, but as a means to correct a deformity, according to the Catholic Education Resource Center.

2. Plastic surgery is acceptable if it provides some "therapeutic benefit," according to Catholic.com. Such benefits could be physical, as in reconstructive surgery following an accident, or psychological. "This is provided that the procedure does not damage some other equal or greater good and provided that it is not intrinsically immoral," the site said.

3. Marcus L. Peterson, a surgeon at The Center For Advanced Plastic Surgery, feels God made us with a desire to be happy, and that plastic surgery represents a means by which to accomplish that. Peterson posted the following response on a message board:

"The God I believe in realizes (having created us) that we are not perfect beings. I also believe that God is benevolent and loves us, wanting us to lead happy and productive lives — and He gave us free will. If there are things that we as individuals can do to improve our sense of happiness; actions which by making us happier with ourselves may even improve our ability to positively interact with and influence others, then I believe these activities could never be frowned upon by The God that I believe in."

4. Trevor Lund, a pastor at Harvest Community Church in Beaumont, Alberta and the self-proclaimed "Director of Awesomeness" at his website, RevTrev.com, answered an email that asked the question or whether Lund thought breast implants are "in God's will?"

"Is breast augmentation in God's will?" Lund wrote: "He really gives us a lot of freedom in this life. It can be against His plan for our lives. It can also be right in line with His plan for our lives. She's got to hear from Him if her concern is that she may be out of His will." (NOTE: The "she" is in reference to the email sender, who claimed to be asking on a friend's behalf.)

5. Most people are familiar with the saying, "Beauty comes from within," but some women feel that can't happen until she's noticed in the first place. That can lead them down the path to breast enhancement surgery, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
