Chris Christie 2016: 7 Key Political Positions of GOP Presidential Hopeful

By    |   Friday, 19 Dec 2014 02:09 PM

Chris Christie is known for not pulling any punches when it comes to his political views. It’s led to calls for him to run for president in 2016, but has also brought him many enemies.

His opinionated attitude makes people either love or hate him, but he says he tries to use common sense on issues, as with these seven positions he takes:

1. Christie vetoed legislation to increase the minimum wage, but voters in a referendum later approved the measure. He also vetoed an income tax increase for wealthy citizens in the state, preferring to turn to massive spending cuts to help improve the state’s economy. He was successful in erasing $11 billion in the state’s budget deficit. He entered the governor’s office with the promise to lower taxes with across-the-board tax cuts.

2. Christie is pro-life and has voiced his opposition to abortion at public rallies, saying that ending abortion was “an issue whose time has come.” As governor he also cut state funding for Planned Parenthood. He switched his pro-choice position to pro-life in 1996 after hearing his daughter’s prenatal heartbeat. He has said that the life of every human being is precious.

3. Using his veto power once again, Christie attempted to block same-sex marriages in the state, but the Supreme Court later overruled this.

4. Christie has repeatedly opposed gun control laws, including a one-gun-a-month purchase in the state. He noted he was in favor of “violence control” instead.

5. With considerations on running for president in 2016, Christie has avoided talking about immigration reform issues. As governor, he said he has no role in determining the immigration debate, but he would make his views known if he becomes a presidential candidate. However, his past support of amnesty for illegal aliens stands in opposition to many conservatives. He objects to the term “illegal immigrant” and has stated that being in the U.S. without proper documentation is not a crime, maintaining that it’s the job of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deal with undocumented people in the country.

6. Christie has vehemently opposed Obamacare and fought against exchanges within the health care program for New Jersey, which could help his 2016 presidential ambitions. He has called Obamacare a failure from the start. He favors “mandate-free” policies from insurers, although he also favors expansion of Medicare.

7. Combining funding for education with reform, Christie was successful in taking on unions and modifying teacher tenure standards in the state’s schools. This was achieved with bipartisan support for “the first time in 100 years,” he told the 2012 Republican National Convention. State aid to education increased to $8.9 billion in the state’s budget in 2012 with money going to education and reform, he said.
