By    |   Tuesday, 24 March 2015 03:28 PM EDT

Chicago is one of the most diverse and interesting cities in the United States. For those who live in the Windy City, the list of local attractions to tap for a potential Chicago staycation is long.

While familiar attractions like the Field Museum or the Shedd Aquarium are on most local's list of good places to go when friends and family visit, there are a ton of lesser-known stops that give locals a reason to stay in Chicago for a staycation.

VOTE NOW: Is Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner Doing a Good Job?

Here are five fun things to do while staying close to home:

1. Try Rock Climbing: While real cliffs might be a distance to travel, those wanting to have a staycation can still partake in the sport close to home — in any weather. Vertical Endeavors, located in Warrenville has 18,000 square feet of climbing space that can accommodate up to 120 climbers in any kind of weather.

2. See endangered and rare plants close to home: See the plants of the world a short drive out of the city. The Morton Arboretum is beautiful in the spring and summer months. The living museum contains 1,700 acres of growing exhibits from 40 countries. The facility offers tram tours for those who cannot walk the park, but also includes nature trails, a maze and a children’s play area – all just 25 miles west of Chicago.

3. Go to the White City: Step back in time to the Chicago's World's Fair with a staycation treasure hunt to find the remnants of the spectacular 1893 event that drew 27 million visitors to Chicago in just six months, according to Chicago Tribune. The Museum of Science and Industry is the largest remaining building from the fair and the only major building still standing.

4. Check out the Conservatory: The Lincoln Park Conservatory grows thousands of specimens to be used in Chicago's parks. The indoor green-houses can be experienced for free. Chicago Botanic Garden is also free and features 385 acres designed in 26 gardens.

5. Tour your hometown for free: Plan a staycation to learn more about your city with the Chicago Greeter Program. You can customize your tour based on what interests you or your family.
