West Virginia has some of the most scenic views in the U.S. making it a great place for cheap travel for visitors on a budget.

Here are five great attractions in the Mountain State:

1. Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex: People looking for cheap travel experiences will like the free museum at the Grave Creek Mound. It is a good spot to learn more about this largest of Adena Burial Mounds considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the state.

2. Wheeling Suspension Bridge: No charge to travel across the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. This bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world when it was built in the 1840s. It was the first bridge built over the Ohio River. It can be found in Wheeling. If bridges are of interest, make a detour to the New River Gorge Bridge. It is one of the most photographed places in the state. It is the longest steel span bridge in the western hemisphere.

3. Palace of Gold: Dubbed "America's Taj Majal," the palace of gold has also been named one of the eight religious wonders to see in the United States by CNN. Located in Moundsville, it includes an award winning rose garden and a gilded residence with stained glass windows, teak-wood furniture and fifty varieties of marble and onyx.

4. Pickett's Fort State Park: Travelers get a lot of bang for their buck at Pickett's Fort State Park. Included in the cheap admission price to this recreation of a 1770s fort are guided tours, craft demonstrations and specialized talks. Kids five and under are free. Outside the fort is a state park that has ample nature trails and picnic areas for making this low cost cheap travel stop.

5. Drive through the Hatfield & McCoy: The Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce is housed in a building made out of coal. A visit there is free. So is the driving tour of Hatfield & McCoy feud sites you can pick up at the Chamber of Commerce. This is a cheap way to experience the infamous history of the area.
