Carole Lombard’s untimely death at the age of 33 meant that her list of award nominations consists of only one: an Academy Award nomination for her performance in “My Man Godfrey.” However, Lombard’s star power was undeniable and she would be honored in other ways throughout her career.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Lombard passed away in 1942, but 18 years later, she was immortalized at 6930 Hollywood Blvd. as part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Distinguished Service Certificate

Two years after her death, Lombard was honored by the treasury department with this certificate and a new Liberty ship being christened the U.S.S. Carole Lombard. The media also noted that “with tear-blurred eyes Capt. Clark Gable stood as Irene Dunne christened the S.S. Carole Lombard” as shown in an old newspaper photograph on DearMrGable.com.

AFI Top 50 Screen Legend


The American Film Institute released their list of American Screen Legends and put Lombard at No. 23. They define an American Screen Legend “as an actor or a team of actors with a significant screen presence in American feature-length films whose screen debut occurred in or before 1950, or whose screen debut occurred after 1950 but who death has marked a completed body of work.”

Carole Lombard Bridge

To celebrate her life, the bridge near her childhood home was renamed the Carole Lombard bridge after her death overlooking St. Mary’s River in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Medal of Freedom

After Lombard’s untimely death, Franklin D. Roosevelt awarded her the Medal of Freedom “as the first woman killed in the line of duty in WWII” as stated on IMDB.com She raised millions of dollars in war bonds for WWII and FDR was an admirer of her dedication.
