Capybara Found at California Water Treatment Facility

Wednesday, 17 August 2011 09:42 AM EDT

A capybara, the world’s largest rodent at 100 pounds, hailing from South America, was found at a California waste-water treatment facility, reports the Telegraph
The giant rodent was spotted at the treatment facility, but quickly disappeared in the brush nearby.

“If you think a giant guinea pig is cute, then you probably would like it,” Todd Tognazzini, lieutenant with the California Department of Fish and Game said.

The cabybara, which can stay underwater for up to five minutes, is believed to be an escaped pet, according to Tognazzini.

The creature was previously spotted in Paso Robles, 175 miles northwest of LA.

An employee managed to snap photos of the animal, estimated to be 2 feet tall.
