Bulimia is an eating disorder that is most common in young women. It is characterized by episodic binge eating and purging through self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives, dieting, or fasting.
Bulimia often occurs between the ages of 13 and 20. In many cases, the person may have previously struggled with obesity. A normal eating plan is important for the recovery of an individual suffering from bulimia – the diet should be structured, simple, and nutritious. A well balanced meal containing all vitamins, minerals, and proteins is the best diet for this disorder. Doctors suggest that small meals should be taken at regular intervals.
The diet should include:
- Eggs and milk to provide necessary protein
- Vegetable oils like olive, sunflower, and soybean
- Dried fruits and nuts
- Foods rich in starch including cereals, peas, and rice
- Fruits, vegetables, and legumes rich in vitamins
- Mineral and vitamin supplements
- Foods rich in zinc including celery, borage, figs, eggplants, and potatoes.
Avoid drinks containing caffeine, alcohol, and sugary foods if you are following a bulimia recovery diet.
