Today marks what would have been the 75
th birthday of Buddy Holly who died tragically at 22 in the infamous plane crash that also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, reports the
La Observed.
“Buddy Holly played rock and roll for only two short years, but the wealth of material he recorded at that time made a major and lasting impact on popular music. Holly was an innovator who wrote his own material and was among the first to exploit such advanced studio techniques as double-tracking. He pioneered and popularized the now-standard rock-band lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame description of Holly’s work reads.
Holly’s widow, who was pregnant at the time of the crash, will accept his Hollywood Walk of Fame star today at 11:30 a.m. outside the Capitol Records building.
Stars of the film ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ are also slated to speak at the daylong event. The memorial celebration will conclude with a concert at The Music Box with musicians Asher, Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Graham Nash, among others.
The concert will later be broadcast during a December special for PBS.
