Bioidentical hormones are a type of hormone therapy used by women to offset conditions related to menopause. These bioidentical hormones can be specially designed to target an individual's specific health needs.
According to the Mayo Clinic, hormones that are described as "bioidentical" simply mean that "hormones in the product are chemically identical to those your body produces."
They are usually mixed and customized by a "compounding pharmacy" to get the desired formulation.

"In fact, the hormones in bioidentical medications may not be any different from those in traditional hormone therapy," said the Mayo Clinic's Dr. Shannon K. Laughlin-Tommaso.
While some believe that bioidentical hormones are a more "natural" form of traditional hormones, Mayo stresses that "natural" means the hormones contained in the product "come from plant or animal sources; they're not synthesized in a lab. However, many of these products still need to be commercially processed to become bioidentical. Traditional hormone therapies don't necessarily exclude natural hormones."
The Food and Drug Administration has responded to so-called myths about such hormones. The FDA stated that it "is not aware of any credible scientific evidence to support claims made regarding the safety and effectiveness of compounded 'BHRT' drugs."
"They are not safer just because they are 'natural,'" Dr. Kathleen Uhl, director of FDA's Office of Women's Health.
