About four million Americans suffer from binge eating disorders. The treatment for binge eating disorders varies from psychotherapy to pharmacotherapy.
People with binge eating disorder exhibit the following symptoms:
1. Regular instances of sudden uncontrolled over-eating, such as ingesting excessive quantity of food within a short span of time. This could be the result of a lack of control. One tends to eat more quickly than under normal circumstances. Also one tends to eat even if one does not feel hungry.
2. Feeling uneasy or having a sense of discomfort after eating.
3. A constant obsession with food, either a quantity of it, or lack of it.
4. Eating without company for the fear of being ridiculed.
5. Purging, fasting, and over-exercising after eating.
6. Absence of any happiness or satisfaction after a meal — A feeling of concern about the problem.
Binge eaters sometimes eat in a state of semi-consciousness, while feeling sleepy, and may not realize that they are eating. Those afflicted require binge eating disorder therapy.
