Bible Prophecy: 9 Times the Mark of the Beast Has Influenced Pop Culture

By    |   Wednesday, 06 May 2015 02:19 PM EDT

The New Testament Book of Revelation cryptically refers to 666 as the mark, name or number of "the Beast." For some Bible prophecy scholars, the Mark of the Beast is thought to be among the characteristics of what is to be known as the great tribulation.

More than 19 centuries after the Book of Revelation was written, musicians, movie makers and others still make reference to 666 and its devilish reputation.

Here are nine times the Mark of the Beast has influenced pop culture.

1. "The Omen:" Starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, this 1976 horror film is about a boy named Damien who has a birthmark that resembles the number 666 on the back of his head. A remake of the movie was released 30 years later starring Julia Stiles and Liev Schreiber. The latter film came out on June 6, 2006 — in a clear reference to the number 666 — and grossed $119.5 million worldwide.

2. "End of Days:"
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, this film is about Satan going to New York to claim his bride. The "666" was actually supposed to be "999" and that 1999 would be when the Prince of Evil would come to claim his bride, according to TV Guide.

3. "Pulp Fiction" (1994)
: According to Snopes, the combination of the mysterious briefcase in Quentin Tarantino's popular drama is "666."

4. "Escape From L.A:"
In director John Carpenter's 1996 movie "Escape From L.A.," 666 is the code that will shut down the world's power -- and in the end, civilization.

5. "Left Behind:" The mark of the beast is referred to repeatedly in the best-selling "Left Behind" Christian book series, with the eighth book in that series being titled "The Mark." The series has brought about four movies. The most recent, "Left Behind," hit theaters in 2014 and starred Nicholas Cage and Lea Thompson.

6. Iron Maiden: In 1982, the rock band Iron Maiden released their album titled, "The Number of the Beast." The album topped the charts in the United Kingdom and reached No. 33 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts in the United States.

7. Aphrodite's Child
: In 1972 the rock band Aphrodite's Child released the double album titled, "666 (The Apocalypse of John 13:18)." One of the members of the band was Vangelis who later composed the Oscar-winning score to the 1981 film, "Chariots of Fire," according to Sing365.

8. Malicious Malware for Mac: In 1998, the Sevendust virus infected and removed various files from Mac computers leaving one file named "666," according to Threatpost.

9. According to Bible Odyssey, "In recent decades, conspiracy-minded individuals who combine idiosyncratic interpretations of the Bible with fears that evil governmental or religious forces are overtaking society have variously interpreted 666 as a reference to the United Nations, some presidents of the United States, the Washington Monument and the European Union."
