How to Celebrate Bastille Day

Wednesday, 13 July 2011 11:37 AM EDT

We can’t all be in France to celebrate Bastille Day, but here are some ways to fête the French version of Independence Day wherever you are:

Go to a French Restaurant: Chances are that your local French restaurant will be observing the Bastille Day tradition. Gather up some friends and treat yourself to some fine French cuisine in the name of democracy.

Visit a local Alliance Française: This foundation aims to introduce Americans to Francophone culture through language, traditions, art, and history. Chapters of the Alliance Française exist all over the country, and your local alliance will surely be taking part in Bastille Day celebrations.

Throw a Party: If you can’t find a Bastille Day event near you, invite friends to celebrate France in your own way. Think warm baguettes, French wine, and an assortment of cheeses followed by café au lait and crème brulée! If you would rather go out, make like the French and enjoy a meal outside of a café.
