Barack Obama Signature Style: What Pundits Quipped About President's Mom Jeans

By    |   Tuesday, 25 November 2014 04:43 PM EST

The “mom jeans” attack began when the president threw out the first pitch at the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star game. The baggy look of the jeans didn’t fit the Barack Obama signature style people had known. The term has popped up ever since, even though first lady Michelle got rid of the jeans. Obama has still been accused of going back to the similar style of jeans.

He doesn’t necessarily have to keep up with the trends of GQ, but he could at least pay attention to the phrase, “dress for success,” complained Robin Givhan in The Washington Post following Obama’s unfortunate appearance on the field. The jeans were baggy, saggy, and had too many creases. Besides, the light blue color was all wrong. What’s worse, the pants were too short. You could see a bit of the white socks above his sneakers when he was standing.

The "mom jeans" term seemed to result from the way Obama wore them high up on his waist, contrasted with the president’s lanky look. Sure, they fit, but for a brief moment he lost that youth appeal he had generated in his fashion choices. Givhan preferred using the term, “sad-sack, grandpa jeans.”

The Wire wouldn’t let things sit still after that with a follow-up “investigation” over the years that tarnished the Barack Obama signature style. It pointed out that Obama was wearing mom jeans long before the all-star incident. He could be seen riding his bicycle through Chicago wearing them while on his campaign for the presidency in 2008. The jeans were too short back then and the sneakers added an even worse touch. This was when the “mom jeans” phrase started, according to the Wire. The all-star game appearance just made it more widely known across the country.

The first three years of his presidency, Obama chose a variation of the jeans, which were still baggy, but maybe not so short. The Wire also reported on his wearing black open-toed sandals with blue jeans, “an unforgivable offense” that was enough to dread a second term.

Nevertheless, the president has defended his Barack Obama signature pants. “I look very sharp in jeans,” he said.
