An asteroid estimated to be about 30 feet in diameter will pass over the Atlantic Ocean at about 1 p.m. EDT today, reports
the Washington Post.
The asteroid is projected to miss a direct collision with the Earth’s surface by a mere 7000 miles — a very “close call” in space.
Should an asteroid of this size hit Earth, it would likely produce a large fireball; but, the damage would be minimal in comparison to past collisions. For example, it was a 112 mile wide asteroid that presumably led to the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
Scientists only seriously consider asteroids “dangerous” if their size is larger than 490 feet in diameter. The next asteroid close-encounter is projected for 2029 when a 900 foot asteroid will pass by Earth.
