Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, which is celebrated by most Christian denominations.
Ash Wednesday got its name from the Christian tradition of putting ashes on the foreheads of believers as a sign of repentance.
Throughout the day at Masses or various worship services, a priest or minister distributes the ashes to each person on their forehead in the shape of the cross. The priest or minister then typically utters the prayer from Genesis “Remember, O man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”
Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance generally observed by fasting or giving up meat.
