Arthritis is a condition that occurs with the breakdown of cartilage in the joints that results in painful inflammation. A joint’s cartilage normally protects it from friction with another bone and allows free and smooth movement. Without cartilage, bones rub together and cause pain, swelling, and stiffness.
There are over 100 different forms of arthritis, which occur in both men and women and vary according to what causes the reduction of cartilage. Some of subtypes of the condition include:
• Osteoarthritis
• Ankylosing spondylitis
• Gonococcal arthritis
• Gout
• Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis
• Other bacterial infections, or nongonococcal bacterial arthritis
• Reactive arthritis, or Reiter syndrome
• Scleroderma
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis is not deadly, but can be very painful. If you feel as though you might suffer from arthritis, see your healthcare provider to determine the right treatment for you.
