Hunting in Arizona: 4 Things to Know Before Applying for a Hunting Permit for Your Kids

By    |   Wednesday, 20 May 2015 03:29 PM EDT

Taking your children hunting can be a formative bonding experience, as long as you have the proper documentation. Here are four things you need to know about permits before taking your kids hunting in Arizona.

1. Children younger than 10 years old do not need a permit to hunt.
Children under age 10 can hunt wildlife other than big game without a license, if they are accompanied by a licensed adult, according to the Arizona Game & Fish Department website.

2. Children cannot hunt big game unless they have taken and passed the Arizona Hunter Education Course.

This class is offered through the Arizona Game & Fish Department for children ages 9 and older and allows them to hunt big game starting at age 10. The classes are offered in a classroom or online, and are available on weekends or week nights. Training is offered up to three times a month, and it covers topics spanning firearm safety, environmental conservation, Arizona hunting laws and regulations, and marksmanship skills.

3. Only one unlicensed child may accompany one adult license holder.
If you have two children and want to take both of them hunting with you, you will have to bring another licensed hunter over the age of 18 with you if both of your children are unlicensed. The Arizona Game & Fish Department restricts each licensed hunter to bringing only one unlicensed minor along with him or her. However, there are no restrictions on taking children under age 10 fishing.

4. A youth combination hunting and fishing license is inexpensive.
If you decide it will be easier to license your children, or if they are older than 10 years old, you can purchase a Youth Combo Hunt & Fish License from the Arizona Game & Fish Department for $5, whether you are an Arizona resident or not.
